Terre Thaemlitz' computer music collaboration with Jane Dowe, 'Institutional Collaborative' (Germany: Mille Plateaux, 1998) MPCD53. It is Dowe's and Thaemlitz' needs to contextualize musicians and listeners within a social framework that can be surmised as the post-Modern condition. It is their operation within a dominant field of cultural influence which opposes such contextualizations that leads to their own unresolved desires for a recoupment of the analogue within the digital domain.

On Institutional Collaborative, Dowe and Terre Thaemlitz created abstract music that was described as a "table-tennis mixing game with lounge and ambient soundclips". Minnesota-born Terre Thaemlitz is an experimental electronic artist who has been releasing ambient and DSP music since 1993 on labels like Instinct, Mille Plateaux, Caipirinha, and his own Comatonse label. Beginning in 1997 with Couture Cosmetique, his work over time has become increasingly complex and sophisticated, as evidenced by 1998’s Means From an End, 1999’s Love for Sale, 2000’s Interstices, and 2002’s Lovebomb, all released on Mille Plateaux, as well as 1998’s Institutional Collaborative with Jane Dowe, a university-based computer music producer
