Adagio assai Ludwig van Beethoven; Kurt Masur; London Philharmonic Orchestra. Allegro vivace Ludwig van Beethoven; Kurt Masur; London Philharmonic Orchestra. Allegro molto Ludwig van Beethoven; Kurt Masur; London Philharmonic Orchestra. This recording features two of Beethoven's most popular Symphonies (3 and 5) which were recorded live in concert during a complete cycle of the symphonies at Royal Festival Hall in 2004 while Masur was Principal Conductor of the Orchestra. He conducted from memory, which gives these performances a special energy and insight. The result is a mighty celebration and sense of rediscovering the drama and euphoria of two of Beethoven's most radical and well-loved Symphonies. 4. kHz, 24-bit PCM – London Philharmonic Orchestra Studio Masters.
Herbert von Karajan recorded Ludwig van Beethoven's complete symphonies four times, first in the 1950s with the Philharmonia Orchestra on EMI, then on three more occasions with the Berlin Philharmonic for Deutsche Grammophon. Karajan's 1963 cycle with Berlin is highly regarded by fans for its consistent interpretations and energetic and emotional playing. Collectors usually rate this set higher than the 1977 and 1985 recordings, also with Berlin on DG, which have been criticized for being somewhat more mechanical in performance and clinical in sound quality.

Unlike the album that included the Fifth Symphony and was fraught with many rhythmic peculiarities, Herreweghe's reading of the First and Third symphonies seems diligently respectful to every nuance of the score. Conductor Philippe Herreweghe returns to the helm of the Royal Flemish Philharmonic for another set of Beethoven symphonies on the PentaTone label, this time the First and Third. Again presented as a multi-channel SACD hybrid disc, PentaTone's sound is clean and detailed without too much digital sterility. Unlike the album that included the Fifth Symphony and was fraught with many rhythmic peculiarities, Herreweghe's reading of the First and Third symphonies seems diligently respectful to every nuance of the score.
Ludwig Van Beethoven's nine symphonies cover pretty much every facet of human existence in one way or another. In other words, they're pretty indispensable. By this point, the Beethoven tics are starting to fall into place. So, that means we get an exceptionally bold and dramatic opening, lightning-quick strings and, in the second movement, some seriously mournful moments. It would be totally wrong to call Beethoven depressing, but his slow movements do tend to lay bare his more 'sensitive' tendencies and the second movement here usually clocks in at about ten minutes, so sit comfortably and bring a hanky. New releases: Irnberger and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra play Beethoven and Rachmaninov with Martin Jones. New releases: Beethoven with the Royal Northern Sinfonia & Lars Vogt and 'Strauss in St Petersburg'.
Beethoven, L. van: Symphony No. 9. "Please retry". Digital Booklet: Beethoven, L. Album Only. The sound of the Royal Flemish Philharmonic conducted by Herreweghe is simply stunning. It is lush, transparent, sumptuous, and well balanced. Although Penatone SACDs are typically beautifully recorded, this one may be the best in my opinion.
