Remembering David Bowie: See All of His Album Covers. 1/11/2016 by Billboard Staff.

David Bowie is the self-titled debut studio album by English musician David Bowie, released on 1 June 1967, on Deram Records. Its style and content bears little overt resemblance to the type of music that he was later known for, such as the folk rock influenced "Space Oddity" or the glam rock of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.

David Bowie began writing the music on Hunky Dory on his first visit to America in 1971. The whole Hunky Dory album reflected my newfound enthusiasm for this new continent that had been opened up to me," Bowie said in 1999. That was the first time a real outside situation affected me so 100 percent that it changed my way of writing and the way I look at things. Traveling by bus from Washington, .

David Bowie is the second studio album by the English musician David Bowie, released under that title by Philips in the UK, and as Man of Words/Man of Music by Mercury in the US, on 14 November 1969. It was reissued in 1972 by RCA Records as Space Oddity (the title of the opening track, which had reached No. 5 in the UK Singles Chart). Space Oddity was the name used for CD releases of the album in 1984, 1990 and 1999, but it reverted to the original, eponymous title for 2009 and 2015 reissues.

You like David Bowie? His early work was a little too jazzy for my taste, but when Hunky Dory came out in '71, I think he really came into the mainstream, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. Classic album - Bowie at his best! Yep, better then ziggy, somehow both are amazing by the way along with everything else he made though. This is the one, the closest he ever got to telling us the truth. Providing the feelings of wonder and adventure (which Bowie had when coming to America) but at the same time, stabbing you through the heart with such an unbearable sadness that it even gives "Blackstar" a run for its money. A truly stellar album, thank you Mr. Bowie. Like with Ziggy Stardust it doesn't really contain any bad or even indifferent song.

14 By the 1971 album Hunky Dory, Bowie was writing instantly appealing pop songs that drew on dark and esoteric subjects. Oh! You Pretty Things, for instance, repackaged Aleister Crowley’s sinister occult millennialism as a bar-room singalong. 18 The recurring theme of mental instability in Bowie’s work connects to his half-brother Terry Burns, who was institutionalised with schizophrenia and killed himself on 16 January 1985.

David Bowie is rock’s greatest chameleon. Never one to sit still, he's pointed at a new musical direction on nearly every album he's released in his career. However, not all of them have had the same artistic and/or commercial impact, so we've ranked all of his albums here, from worst to best. His earliest singles, which date back to the mid-'60s, found him, like so many other London-based musicians, trying his hand at copying American R&B sounds.
