Spirituals (also known as Negro spirituals, Spiritual music, or African-American spirituals) is a genre of songs originating in America and created by African Americans. Spirituals were originally an oral tradition that imparted Christian values while also describing the hardships of slavery. Although spirituals were originally unaccompanied monophonic (unison) songs, they are best known today in harmonized choral arrangements
Before 500 Ancient Music. 1450 - 1600 Renaissance. Album LP published in Italy in 1970 being unique not only for its content but for the group to which it is attributed, because the label Joker invented the interpreter group of the album. The Alabama Singers' did not exist with that name, but it was the 'Pilgrim Travelers', gospel group based in Houston (Texas) -were not even from Alabama!- in the early '30s, following the style of the famous quartet 'Soul Stirrers'
Negro spirituals are songs created by the Africans who were captured and brought to the United States to be sold into slavery. Over the years, these slaves and their descendants adopted Christianity, the religion of their masters. Spirituals were created extemporaneously and were passed orally from person to person. These folksongs were improvised as suited the singers. There is record of approximately 6,000 spirituals or sorrow songs; however, the oral tradition of the slaves’ ancestors-and the prohibition against slaves learning to read or write-meant that the actual number of songs is unknown.
