The set focuses on abandoned recording sessions from their unfinished 1966–67 album Smile which – if completed – would have followed the group's 11th studio album Pet Sounds. It features comprehensive session highlights and outtakes, while the first 19 tracks comprise an approximation of what the completed album might have sounded like.

This compilation album was put together by BBC Radio 1 in conjunction with the music magazine Melody Maker and was a compilation of live and studio performances by the artists that had been broadcast on BBC Radio between 1991 and 1995. The compilation was only issued in the UK. The U2 track featured on this compilation is a live version of One, Unchained Melody taken from the live performance at Sydney Australia on November 27, 1993. The same performance was the basis for the Zoo TV Live fan club CD as well as the Zoo TV DVD. The performance was also broadcast on radio, and it was from.
After increasing use of overdubs and multi-layered recordings on recent albums, there was at first a consensus to record the new album live. In keeping with the back-to-roots concept, the cover artwork was planned to be an update of the cover of their first album, Please Please Me, with the band looking down the stairwell of EMI's headquarters office block in Manchester Square, London. A different photograph from the same photo session was later used on the compilation album 1967–1970 (aka The Blue Album)
