I'm a big Carl Orff fan and have had this recording (the Deutsch Gramophon version) on vinyl for many years. I bought the CD for convenience. Although the piece is based on some very old and bawdy poems, the piece actually dates from the 1930s.

Blanziflor Et Helena. Set track as current obsession.

Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana is probably the most frequently performed choral work of the 21st century, made popular by the memorable surfing advert for Old Spice aftershave. But have you ever wondered where its familiar title comes from? The name has Latin roots – 'Carmina' means 'songs', while 'Burana' is the Latinised form of Beuren, the name of the Benedictine monastery of Benediktbeuren in Bavaria.

Stolze is ideal as the roasted swan and Fischer-Dieskau encompasses the very varied requirements of the baritone's music with ease. In spite of the presence of more than 30 rivals in the catalogue, this distinguished performance, authorized by the composer and now sounding better than ever, easily retains its place at the head of the queue. Musicians: Berlin Deutsche Opera Orchestra, conducted by Eugen Jochum Gundula Janowitz (Soprano), Gerhard Stolze (Tenor), Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (Baritone) with Schöneberg Boys Choir.
