Bettye Swann (born Betty Jean Champion, October 24, 1944, Shreveport, Louisiana) is an American soul music singer, best known for her 1967 hit song "Make Me Yours". She grew up in Arcadia, Louisiana, one of 14 children, and moved to Los Angeles, California, in 1963.

If Bettye Swann is remembered by anyone other than soul obsessives, it is for her chart-topping hit "Make Me Yours" from 1967. Hopefully, this collection will open a few ears to the low-key, genre-bending singer who blended the full-bodied gritty sound of Southern soul and the smooth sheen of soul from the urban North. The union did not provide any hits, but the body of work is quite impressive.

Tell It Like It Is" is a song written by George Davis and Lee Diamond and originally recorded and released in 1966 by Aaron Neville. In 2010, the song was ranked No. 391 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. In 1966, Aaron Neville recorded and released the original version of "Tell It Like It Is" on his album also entitled Tell It Like It Is (Par-Lo Records).

Well, the album leads with the inimitable ‘Tell it like it is’ – surely Aaron’s hymn. The gentle presence of horns supporting not competing with Aaron’s delicate pleading refrain is indicative of the whole album. The music is, indeed, THAT good. The LP opens strong with Bettye Swann’s self-written I’m Lonely for You, a delicious mid-tempo tune carried by velvet orchestration that is never intrusive. Her singing is sheer magic; while angelic sounding backing vocals further embellish this piece of art, it’s Swann’s optimistic, tender voice that immediately grabs your attention. A brilliant, horn-heavy beater with a hint of xylophone.
