João Gilberto is a bossa nova album by João Gilberto, originally released in Brazil as a vinyl LP in 1973 and reissued on CD in 1988. João Gilberto released another album named João Gilberto in 1961, as well as several EPs with only his name as title. The minimal instrumentation – just Gilberto's guitar and voice, plus Sonny Carr's very sparse percussion – and the relentless beat give the album a hypnotic feel. The album's sound engineer was famous electronic music pioneer Wendy Carlos

Compiling all of João Gilberto's revolutionary recordings from 1958 to 1961, this is a pocket history of the birth of bossa nova. On instant standards like Antonio Carlos Jobim's lilting "Chega de Saudade" and elegantly languid "Desafinado," Gilberto's affectless, vibrato-free vocal style and beautifully restrained guitar work bring cool modernity to the rhythmic pulse of Brazilian music

João Gilberto Prado Pereira de Oliveira, known as João Gilberto (Portuguese: ; June 10, 1931), is a Brazilian singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He created the musical genre of bossa nova in the late 1950s. João Gilberto was born in Juazeiro, Bahia, Brazil. From early on, music became an essential part of his life. João Gilberto, aka the "White Album" (1973), featured hypnotic minimalist execution, limited to the singer, his guitar, and Sonny Carr on drums. 1976 saw the release of The Best of Two Worlds, a reunion with Stan Getz, featuring singer Miúcha, (sister of Chico Buarque), who had become Gilberto's second wife in April 1965. Amoroso (1977) backed Gilberto with the lush string orchestration of Claus Ogerman, who had provided a similar sound to Jobim's instrumental recordings in the late 1960s and early 1970s. 1963: The Warm World of João Gilberto. 1964: Getz/Gilberto with Stan Getz. 1965: Herbie Mann & João Gilberto with Antônio Carlos Jobim.
