Nasty Little Man. Do you like scary movies? Sorry, let’s be more specific. Yorke’s soundtrack for the new remake of the cult-classic Seventies horror flick Suspiria isn’t a film score in the way that, say, his bandmate Jonny Greenwood’s avant-orchestral opuses for There Will Be Blood and Phantom Thread are film scores. Nor is it a proper sequel to either of his own solo albums, 2006’s The Eraser and 2014’s Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes (an underrated triumph that he’s finally touring widely in the . Suspirium is a radium-glow piano ballad that would have fit in nicely on Radiohead’s most recent album; the jazzy soul of Unmade and the trip-hop shiver of Has Ended are even more surprising, carrying welcome echoes of Yorke and c. s brilliant Amnesiac-era B-sides. These tunes are vintage Yorke, and they make you wish he’d written more of them for Suspiria.
At the Venice Film Festival, Thom Yorke likened composing the score for Luca Guadagnino’s remake of 1977 horror film Suspiria to making spells. Certainly, Yorke’s first ever soundtrack summons the darkness of horror, and the terror of blood and evil, over 25 tracks. But Suspiria is not all creepy instrumentals. A handful of tracks stand out, and are among Yorke’s best solo work. The Radiohead frontman’s debut piece written for the 007 film Spectre was a sparse piano-led ballad, and Suspirium, the first single to be released from this soundtrack, takes that same intimate approach to desolate depths.
Thom Yorke is an unexpected choice of composer for Luca Guadagnino’s remake of Suspiria, Dario Argento’s 1977 horror classic. The original’s iconic soundtrack came from Goblin, an Italian progressive-rock outfit who brought a wild, cacophonous aesthetic to Argento’s moody mind-fuck of a film. Just listen to something like There Is No Ice (For My Drink), off his last solo album, Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes: In Yorke’s hands, even muscular club tracks come off sounding like vaporous sighs. For what it’s worth suspiria is Latin for sighs ; the film’s title comes from Thomas de Quincey’s essay Suspiria de Profundis, or Sighs from the Depths.

Suspirium is a song taken from Thom Yorke’s soundtrack for the 2018 horror film Suspiria. Thom sings about the dilemma of existence. He starts off with the beautiful line that This is a waltz thinking about our bodies and what they mean for our salvation which reflects how we as souls in these bodies play out fulfilling our desires through the choices we encounter in our lives. He goes on to sing about how we are thrust into cycles of pain and joy Is the darkness ours to take? Bathed in lightness.

Thom Yorke: He was kind of nicely stalking me for a bit. I can't quite remember. Unfortunately, yes. The 2-LP soundtrack album for Suspiria is out now via XL Recordings. Thom Yorke is currently on tour in North America (sadly, no Seattle date). Yorke is currently working on a new solo album that will be out in 2019.
