Marking the first time since 1978 that Bush has released 2 albums in a single year, it harks back to her solo piano roots whilst also features Bush embarking on an experimental journey with song structure. Recorded right after her re-production of The Sensual World and The Red Shoes, the album explores storytelling over a longer period of time and features both of Bush’s longest songs, both with a running time over 10 minutes. Spawning only one single, Wild Man, the album was also supported by a short visual for the single, one for Lake Tahoe, and another for Misty.

50 Words for Snow is only her second album of original material in the last 17 years, and she hasn't performed a full concert since her groundbreaking and theatrical Tour of Life wrapped up its six-week run in 1979. So it's no surprise that she readily sympathizes with the misunderstood monster at the center of "Wild Man": "Lying in my tent, I can hear your cry echoing round the mountainside/ You sound lonely. 50 Words for Snow is teeming with classic Bush-ian characterizations and stories- fantasies, personifications, ghosts, mysteries, angels, immortals

Kate Bush is on a roll. 50 Words For Snow is the second album to be released by her in 2011, though Director's Cut was reworking's of old songs so in reality it's her first album of new material since 2005's Aerial. Anyone like myself who found that album so captivating is likely to have similar feelings about this one too. 50 Words For Snow whilst not exactly what you'd call a concept album does have a theme running through it and not surprisingly that theme is snow

It’s a Christmas miracle that Kate Bush released two albums in 2011. However, Director’s Cut, a reinterpretation of songs from The Sensual World and The Red Shoes, inspired her to get working on new material. The fact that the music has a definitive winter solitude inspired her to complete this album before the season passed. The studio perfectionist in her ensures that each song sounds complete and sonically rewarding. The piano is deep and measured, building to dramatic heights. No track is shorter than six-plus minutes, and two roll out at more than 11 and 13 minutes
