A selection by Barry Humphries of his favourite gramophone records. 46 tracks on 2 CDs. The songs I liked were in the tradition of popular song: they were short stories of romance, the expectation of it and its disappointments. Sometimes, they were novelty songs, a genre which has now disappeared. All of them, like the songs in this anthology, were intended to be danced to and in many cases the vocal lyric occurred at the end of a long orchestral interlude, almost like an afterthought.

Who is the real Barry Humphries? We know that his mother called him Sunny Sam. And that he's a scholar, an aesthete and a reformed alcoholic. All this while, Humphries lived as precariously and outrageously as Barry Mackenzie, the cartoon character he had invented who graced the pages of Private Eye in the 1960s and 1970s. Humphries and I had lunch the following week in a West End club and took a taxi afterwards - his immaculately-shod feet up on the jump seat - to Maggs in Berkeley Square, where we perused some old folios together.

The Four Last Songs marks a staging point on the long musical journey that has found composers luxuriating in the soprano voice. Strauss, more than many others, understood this most quintessentially feminine of voices and wrote with extraordinary sympathy, imagination and love for it (hardly surprising given that his wife Pauline was a soprano). The soprano voice, whose range occupies (roughly) two octaves upward from middle C, can float above a large symphony orchestra with ease, allowing for that long-breathed cantilena which forms such a central characteristic of the Four Last Songs.

Wilberforce Clayborne Humphries is a fictional character from the BBC1 comedy show, Are You Being Served?. He was played by John Inman from 1972 to 1985. The character was played by actor Jason Watkins in the 2016 revival which formed part of BBC Television's Landmarks of Comedy season. Mr. Wilberforce Claybourne Humphries, born 1938/9, is the junior menswear assistant. His sexuality is used as a catalyst for many comedic situations and one-liners

Officially the album is untitled, but is widely known by various monikers, including Led Zeppelin IV or 4, Four Symbols, Zoso or Zofo (depending on how you decid. Whatever it’s known as, it’s high on any rare record collector’s list of desirable albums, as long as it’s on the Atlantic ‘red/plum’ label. What is less well known though, is that the label design itself has been littered with mistakes and changes in its short lifespan. I have located 5 possible variations of ‘issue’. Virtually identical to the 1st issue, but some sharp-eyed Atlantic Records employee (perhaps!) has spotted the errant feather symbol on Side Two and this has been corrected. Led Zeppelin IV - 2nd label issue A Side. A side label is identical to ‘1st issue’ above.
