A jazz funeral is a funeral procession accompanied by a brass band, in the tradition of New Orleans, Louisiana. The term "jazz funeral" was long in use by observers from elsewhere, but was generally disdained as inappropriate by most New Orleans musicians and practitioners of the tradition. The preferred description was "funeral with music"; while jazz was part of the music played, it was not the primary focus of the ceremony.

George Lewis Jazz Funeral At New-Orleans CD. I wasn't too happy with it, it wasn't for me, I guess I was just thinking a little bit more up-beat. But saying that, the price was good, so good value, I'm sure that other people might like that type of music, so I don't want to be too negative. you get what you pay. Verified purchase: Yes Condition: New. by quasiprof19 Sep, 2016. Surprisingly entertaining, given the title, and enjoyable.

The title is actually quite inaccurate, for "Just a Closer Walk with Thee" is the only funeral song included on the date, and there is nothing somber about any of the joyful music. Trumpeter/vocalist Kid Howard, who was often very erratic during the era (particularly on radio broadcasts), sounds in top form; the consistent trombonist Jim Robinson is an asset in the ensembles, as usual; the rhythm section really drives the group, and clarinetist Lewis often seems to be quite exuberant.
