George Gurdjieff was born in 18771 in Alexandropol, Russia, to parents of Greek origin. His father, an illiterate herdsman, inherited the oral tradition of an ancient culture and imprinted Gurdjieff’s childhood with poems and myths of a distant past. Gurdjieff writes with great respect and admiration of this period and its formative influence on his later life. Along with his father, he considered his first teacher to have been a certain Bors priest, and attributes to the joint influence of these two mentors his unique ability to cope with challenge

The Armenian Gurdjieff Folk Instruments Ensemble was founded by Levon Eskenian to play ethnographically authentic arrangements of the . Gurdjieff/Thomas de Hartmann piano music. Their debut album on ECM, Music of . Gurdjieff, was widely acclaimed, and won an Edison Award as Album of the Year in 2012. Now Eskenian and his musicians turn their attention to the music of Komitas Vardapet (1869-1935). Music is performed by an Armenian ensemble of traditional instruments, whose appearance is presented in the 28-page booklet attached to the package. That this transcription is detrimental to the musical intent is tempered by Komitas's note on each score mentioning which folk instruments had influenced the composition. This album aims to complete the circle, and for a world music fan, the relatively modern pieces hence seem of an earlier century.
On this ECM album, Levon Eskenian takes Gurdjieff's music a step closer to its roots by arranging the piano pieces for the kinds of instruments and folk ensembles the composer would have been most familiar with. The results sound remarkably like folk music of the regions in which Gurdjieff lived and traveled. Some of the instruments Eskenian uses in the Gurdjieff Folk Instruments Ensemble may be familiar to Western listeners with an interest in Eastern music, but some are likely to be exotic to all but specialists and committed fans

At one point he described his teaching as "esoteric Christianity". At different times in his life Gurdjieff formed and closed various schools around the world which followed his teachings. Georges Ivanovich Gurdjieff (January 13, 1866? – October 29, 1949) was a Greek-Armenian mystic and self-professed ‘teacher of dancing’.
Mr Gurdjieff then turned to his neighbour on the left and reproached him for having carried out badly his role as Director. This seems a small thing to you. But for those who know how to conduct their affairs in life, it is a big thing. There is not just one aspect. In reality there are seven of them. If you know how to conduct one of your affairs well, the others could go well, even automatically. But if you neglect only one of these aspects the result will be bad, even though you followed this business through your whole life. 6 Transcript from a Paris Meeting led by Gurdjieff, 1943. 7 G.
