Art Pepper was born in Gardena, California, on September 1, 1925. His mother was a 14-year-old runaway; his father, a merchant seaman. Both were violent alcoholics, and when Art was still quite young he was sent to live with his paternal grandmother. He expressed early musical interest and talent, and he was given lessons. He had become a heroin addict in the 1940s, and his career was interrupted by drug-related prison sentences in 1954–56, 1960–61, 1961–64 and 1964–65; the final two sentences were served in San Quentin. While in San Quentin he played in an ensemble with saxophonist Frank Morgan. In the late 1960s Pepper spent time in. Synanon, a drug rehabilitation group. 1957 Art Pepper Quartet by John Tynan. Art Pepper Quartet' 64 In San Francisco Contents.

This LP contains a live performance from early in altoist Art Pepper's career in which he is joined by pianist Sonny Clark, Harry Babasin on bass and cello, and drummer Bobby White. Recorded at the legendary Lighthouse, the music is better than the recording quality. Pepper and Clark have many fine solos on the six standards, and Gershwin & Gershwin's "'S Wonderful," but Vol. 1 (there never was a Vol. 2) is strictly for collectors.

Art Pepper by C. Michael Bailey, published on March 24, 2015 at All About Jazz. Find more Building a Jazz Library articles. Pepper's playing had come under the spell of John Coltrane, an influence heard in abundance on the horribly recorded Art Pepper Quartet Live in San Francisco, 1964 and the recently released Renascence, recorded live 1975. Pepper's tone began to fray, betraying the naked emotion he would emit from his horn during the end of his life.

The Art Pepper Quartet has been added to your Cart. Recorded in late 1956 and released in early 1957, the same year as the landmark Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section, The Art Pepper Quartet (Art Pepper: saxophone, Russ Freeman: piano, Ben Tucker: bass, Gary Frommer: drums) is back for its 60th anniversary.
