THE HIGH-LOWS was a Japanese punk rock band formed in 1995. The band was popular since the very beginning, as vocalist Koumoto Hiroto and guitarist Mashima Masatoshi were both central members in THE BLUE HEARTS, which had recently broken up. Keyboardist Shirai Mikio was also related to THE BLUE HEARTS, for which he had been a support member.
I first heard Lolo Zouaï last year with "High Highs to Low Lows" and loved something about the subtly of her music. I took a chance and listened to this album and it's really cool. Nothing too groundbreaking but just some nice hip-hop inspired R&B with playful lyrics and beautiful melodies. It's a nice culmination of her progress as an artist.
The 24-year old singer’s debut album, High Highs to Low Lows, is full of pop hooks and casual brags, yet Zouaï sounds most proud-and comfortable-when working with the real facts of her life, particularly when they lack glamour. I can’t wait to really get paid, not just minimum wage, she sings on the title track, which serves as a mission statement of sorts. They think it’s all Gucci but it’s 99 cents/I swear. Keeping with the Grande-embodied, lite-hip-hop wave currently washing over contemporary pop, High Highs to Low Lows incorporates trap bass and brooding synths into an effective, of-the-moment sound. On single Ride, Stelios builds a swirling whirlpool of timpani, guitar plucks, claps, and looped yodels to create a coquettish, urgent banger.

These consistent high-lows don't have to be the end of me. I've been wading these dark waters too long, how do I just let go? I have a full life of exceptional memories and dreams still yet to fulfill.
