Son of a Preacher Man" is a song written and composed by American songwriters John Hurley and Ronnie Wilkins and recorded by British singer Dusty Springfield in September 1968 for the album Dusty in Memphis. Springfield's version was produced by Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd, and Arif Mardin for her first album for the Atlantic Records label and became an international hit reaching in the United States and in her native United Kingdom when it was released in late 1968

Rene Magritte might have painted a very simple picture for The Son of Man. There are some interesting things that made this more meaningful than just showing a guy who seems to be taking a picture while an apple exactly blocked his face as it fell down. In my opinion, as most paintings have a very vague explanation nowadays, it shows that man is not perfect as seen on the inverted elbow, and that means we have our imperfections in life as the son of man. The reason why the picture is named son of man and why the apple is there is probably because of a type of biblical reference.

Son Of A Preacher Man was Dusty Springfield’s biggest hit, charting at in the US and in the UK. The song got a late boost back onto the charts in 1994, when Quentin Tarantino included it in his film Pulp Fiction. Tarantino was so attached to the song that he would have cut its scene if he couldn’t get the rights to the song. Aretha’s father was a preacher and both of my grandfathers were preachers. I said, ‘She’s the daughter of a preacher man and you might say I’m the son of a preacher man,’ and that’s how we came up with the title. It took us half an hour, maybe 45 minutes, to write the song. The Son of Man is a Belgian surrealist painting. It was painted in 1964 by René Magritte. The painting was originally intended to be a self-portrait. The painting conveys a man in an overcoat wearing a bowler hat and standing in front of a short wall. Behind this short wall are a cloudy sky and the sea. You cannot see the face of the man, since it is largely obscured by a floating green apple. However, you can see the eyes of the man as they are peeking over the edge of the apple. It resembles The Great War on Facades. When you look at this other painting you will notice that it also consists of a person standing in front of a wall overlooking the sea. Here, it is a woman holding an umbrella and her face is covered by a flower. Magritte is fascinated by surrealist art as he also has another similar painting called Man in the Bowler Hat. Here, the face of the man is blocked by a bird and not an apple.

Magritte painted The Son of Man as a self-portrait. The painting consists of a man in an overcoat and a bowler hat standing in front of a short wall, beyond which is the sea and a cloudy sky. The man's face is largely obscured by a hovering green apple. However, the man's eyes can be seen peeking over the edge of the apple. Another subtle feature is that the man's left arm appears to bend backwards at the elbow. At the start of 1946 Margritte was painting in both his realist style and his impressionist style. Some of his work, like The Son of Man were already headed toward more extreme colors. This extreme style, closer to some of Van Gogh's paintings, would accelerate in late 1947 when he was invited to hold his first solo exhibition in Paris at the Galerie du Faubourg in May 1948.
