About this Album: This release features two piano concertos by Tchaikovsky: Concerto No. 1 and No. 2. Brilliant performance by Derek Han, accompanied by St. Petersburg Philharmonic under the baton of Paul Freeman.
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 3 in E-flat major, Op. posth. 75, was originally begun as a Symphony in E-flat. The composer ultimately abandoned this symphony, but, in 1893, started to rework it into a piano concerto, before abandoning all but the first movement, which he completed as a concert piece for piano and orchestra. It was published posthumously, in 1894, as a single-movement Allegro Brillante
Tchaikovsky: Piano Concertos 1, 2 & 3 - Prokofiev: Piano Concerto 5 - Bartok: Piano Concerto 2 - Emil Gilels, Sviatoslav Richter, Lorin Maazel. Richter is an old hand with the Tchaikovsky Piano Concertos. His style is closest to the great classical pianists of 50 years ago, notably Dame Myra Hess and Artur Rubinstein. Van Cliburn's RCA recording in 1958, (shortly following his having won the Tchaikovsky competition in Moscow to the shock of Russian classicists) was somewhat up tempo and many consider it still the best.

Although Graffman's bravura 1969 recording of Tchaikovsky's First Concerto with George Szell leading the Cleveland Orchestra was once briefly released on CD, the remainder of the recordings are fresh to CD. This includes not only Graffman's thrilling recordings of Tchaikovsky's Second and Third Concerto with Eugene Ormandy leading the Philadelphia Orchestra, both made in a single session in 1965, but also his staggering 1962 recordings of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition and Balakirev's Islamey.

All three of the Tchaikovsky piano concertos have colorful and explosive orchestration. There's also a very Russian flavor, which is likely because of the folk tunes the composer used. Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat Minor. Tchaikovsky composed his first piano concerto between November 1874 and February 1875. He performed the piece for Nikolai Rubinstein (a famous piano player of the day) soon after it was finished. Tchaikovksy's hope was that Rubinstein would like it and perform the premiere, which would make the piece more well-known
The Piano Concerto No. 1 in B♭ minor, Op. 23, was composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky between November 1874 and February 1875. It was revised in the summer of 1879 and again in December 1888. The first version received heavy criticism from Nikolai Rubinstein, Tchaikovsky's desired pianist. The concerto follows the traditional form of three movements: · Allegro non troppo e molto maestoso – Allegro con spirito (B♭ minor – B♭ major) · Andantino semplice – Prestissimo – Tempo I (D♭ major) · Allegro con fuoco – Molto meno mosso – Allegro vivo (B♭ minor – B♭ major) A standard performance lasts between 30 and 36 minutes, the majority of which is taken up by. the first movement. The first movement is initiated with four emphatic B♭ minor chords, which lead to a lyrical and passionate theme in D♭ major.
